Familiarity-Based Stimulus Generalization of Conditioned Suppression

چکیده
We report that stimulus novelty/familiarity is able to modulate stimulus generalization and discuss the theoretical implications of novelty/familiarity coding. Rats in Skinner boxes received clicker → shock pairings before generalization testing to a tone. Before clicker training, different groups of rats received preexposure treatments designed to systematically modulate the clicker and the tone's novelty and familiarity. Rats whose preexposure matched novelty/familiarity (i.e., either both or neither clicker and tone were preexposed) showed enhanced suppression to the tone relative to rats whose preexposure mixed novelty/familiarity (i.e., only clicker or tone was preexposed). This was not the result of sensory preconditioning to clicker and tone. (PsycINFO Database Record

Generalization of a conditioned inhibitor of response suppression in rats.
Following acquisition of conditioned suppression of barpresses to a visual conditiondd stimulus (CS), rats were subjected to a particular variety of differentiation training procedures. An auditory conditioned inhibitor (CI), which preceded and accompanied the CS on some trials, signaled that inescapable shock will not be given on that trial. When the CI acquired the capacity to attenuate marke...
متن کاملGeneralization of conditioned fear along a dimension of increasing fear intensity.
The present study investigated the extent to which fear generalization in humans is determined by the amount of fear intensity in nonconditioned stimuli relative to a perceptually similar conditioned stimulus. Stimuli consisted of graded emotionally expressive faces of the same identity morphed between neutral and fearful endpoints. Two experimental groups underwent discriminative fear conditio...
متن کاملTwo components of responding in Pavlovian lick suppression.
The present research examined the temporal distribution of responding in a lick suppression paradigm. In Experiment 1, rats were trained with either a 30- or a 120-s conditioned stimulus (CS), which was followed either by a footshock (unconditioned stimulus [US]) or nothing. Licking during the CS was suppressed only in the former condition. Suppression was more pronounced early in the CS. In Ex...
متن کاملEffects of stimulus preexposure on the generalization of conditioned taste aversions in infant rats.
Generalization of a conditioned taste aversion in infant rats and how this is affected by stimulus preexposure was investigated in a series of experiments. In Experiment 1 generalization of a conditioned aversion between two tastes (sweet and salty) was found, and the effect of tastes preexposure was a reduction in generalization (Experiment 2). However, when these tastes were combined with a c...
متن کاملRole of dopamine D3 receptors in the expression of conditioned fear in rats.
There has been considerable interest in the role of dopamine D(3) receptors in appetitive conditioning but few studies have examined their role in aversive conditioning. The present study examined the effect of the dopamine D(3) receptor-preferring partial agonist BP 897 (1-(4-(2-naphthoyl-amino)butyl)-4-(2-methoxyhenyl)-1A-piperazine hydrochloride) and the selective dopamine D(3) receptor anta...
